James McTague was born February 13, 1952 as the 6th of 10 children in a blue collar Joliet Irish Catholic
family. From this humble beginning Jim earned his bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University, a
master’s degree at Oklahoma State University, and his doctoral degree from the Illinois School of
Professional Psychology with an internship at the West Side Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in
Chicago.
In 1975 James McTague, Psy.D married Becky McTague, Ed.D- project director and professor in literacy at
Roosevelt University. Together this happy couple has three children, and two grandchildren- including a newborn baby girl. The McTagues became residents of Cary thirteen years ago in 1993 and started attending Willow
Creek soon after. Two of Dr. McTague’s children are graduates of and the third
is currently attending Cary Grove High School.
As a licensed clinical psychologist with over twenty-five years of experience with children, teens, adults
and senior citizens Dr. McTague founded in 1987- and is still president of- Behavioral Health Providers,
P.C. This local small business has offices in Cary, Crystal Lake, and Geneva. Dr. McTague has also
worked in medical/physical/substance abuse rehabilitation and psychiatric facilities in
rural/suburban/inner city settings; and has specialty training in behavioral medicine, family therapy,
and Christian counseling.
The good doctor has provided training for medical and psychology interns/residents, taught as an adjunct
instructor on the college level, as well as, given lectures and workshops to community and children groups.
He is listed as a member in American Psychological Association (APA), the American Association of Christian
Counselors (AACC), and the National Register of Health Service Providers (NRHSPP).
Dr. McTague’s progressive ideals are rooted in his Christian upbringing in parochial elementary school
and seminarian high school, as well as, his community involvement with civic groups- McHenry County Defenders, Boy’s Club, Lions,
Kiwanis, and the Boy Scouts of American (as an Eagle Scout, assistant Scout Master, Scout Master, and
Chicago Area District Chairman). Most of all, Dr. McTague, throughout his life has witnessed the struggles
of families of all economic levels and their needs in the community in order to support their loved ones.
If the county leadership has not improved the quality of your home life then improve the quality of the
county leadership. Dr. McTague has demonstrated leadership in improving the quality of life for many family
lives. He will improve the quality of McHenry County.
